CDC Releases Updated Guidance for Fully Vaccinated People

On April 27, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued guidance on Interim Public Health Recommendations for Fully Vaccinated People. Per the CDC, people are considered to be fully vaccinated two weeks following their second dose in a 2-dose series vaccine (Pfizer, Moderna) or two weeks following a single dose vaccine (J&J).

People who are fully vaccinated can:

  • Resume the same activities they did prior to the pandemic without wearing a mask or social distancing, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance.
  • Travel in the U.S. without having to get tested before or after travel or self-quarantine after travel.
  • Travel internationally without getting tested before leaving the U.S. unless testing is required by the destination or self-quarantine when returning to the U.S. Travelers on international flights are still required to show a negative test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding an international flight to the U.S. The CDC also recommends travelers still get tested 3-5 days after international travel.
  • Be around others if they have been in proximity to someone with COVID-19 and not have to undergo testing unless they develop symptoms. However, the CDC recommends testing for those who live or work in a correctional or detention facility or homeless shelter that have been around someone with COVID-19, even if they do not develop symptoms.

Further, the CDC emphasizes that individuals should continue to follow guidance at the workplace and local businesses. Fully vaccinated individuals are still required to wear a mask on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States, and in U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations.
