About Hall Benefits Law (HBL)

At HBL, we’re not just practicing ERISA law—we’re revolutionizing it. As a boutique firm founded in 2013, we specialize in ERISA compliance, Health and Welfare Plans, Retirement Plans, and Executive Compensation, serving individuals, businesses of all sizes, plan sponsors, and fiduciaries nationwide. Our disruptive approach focuses on value-based billing like contingency-fee TPA/PBM negotiations and helps clients slash costs and risks in an environment fraught with legislative reform. Our core attorney team is comprised of Partner-level employees with decades of ERISA experience. If you thrive on autonomy, measurable impact, and a psychologically safe environment that fosters motivation and inclusion, join us to lead the future of employee benefits law.

Position Overview

Lead transformative ERISA engagements as a remote Partner through expert advisory and business development. You’ll spearhead high-stakes work in a flexible, innovative setting, blending billable hours with flat-fee and contingency models. With 11 paid holidays and 15 days of PTO, you will work 1,880 hours a year (235 workdays x 8 hours a day), blended between billable and non-billable work, with a target of 1,500 billable hours. This role suits visionary leaders passionate about disrupting traditional legal operations via outside-the-box, client-focused strategies—perfect for ERISA experts seeking purpose-driven growth.

At HBL, we maintain our positive reputation with clients by

  • Targeting a clearly defined scope, budget, and timeline, which is agreed upon with the client in advance – before we engage in any billable activities.
  • Proactively communicating with clients throughout the engagement, especially when new information is revealed that would impact scope, budget, or timeline.
  • Ensuring clients are in control of what work does or does not get performed.
  • Hosting close-out meetings with clients at completion of work to reiterate the scope, what we did, the deliverables we provided, the value created, and any potential next steps the client should consider to enhance their position.
  • Focusing on value creation and proactive communication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead ERISA Excellence: Guide clients on complex compliance, plan design, and proactive audits of retirement/health plans, navigating legislative changes, PBM scrutiny, and fiduciary duties to deliver measurable risk reduction.
  • Shape Executive Compensation: Design compliant incentive plan structures that align with business goals, enhancing client retention through proactive, outcome-oriented advice.
  • Build Lasting Client Relationships: Uphold HBL protocols like scoped engagements, issue-spotting, and close-out meetings, ensuring client retention and high satisfaction. We want you to build long-lasting relationships as an “outsourced in-house ERISA counsel.”
  • Fuel Firm Growth: Contribute to lead generation and brand awareness through webinars, conferences, industry group meetings, thought leadership, media interviews, prospect calls, and scope development.
  • Foster Collaboration: Collaborate remotely with clients and other HBL team members using Clio, NetDocs, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Outlook.
  • Mitigate Risks: Uphold cybersecurity, privacy best practices, and liability management, reinforcing HBL’s trusted reputation.

Qualifications and Experience

  • JD from an accredited law school; active bar admission (multi-jurisdictional preferred).
  • 20+ years in ERISA, preferably at the Partner level, with proven experience in Health and Welfare plans, Retirement Plans, and Executive Compensation.
  • Deep expertise in ERISA regulations and employee benefits legal compliance trends (e.g., SECURE 2.0, CAA and No Surprises Act, PBM reforms).
  • Strong business acumen and stakeholder management.
  • LLM in Taxation a plus but is not required.
  • Have a can-do and proactive mindset. You’re not the type of person that waits to be told what to do.
  • Team player who offers experience and advice to other HBL partners and also receives ideas and feedback from others.

What We Offer

  • Competitive Rewards: Competitive base + incentives based on your contribution to firm-specific goals, comprehensive benefits, and malpractice coverage.
  • Remote Flexibility: Fully remote with autonomy over hours—prioritizing work-life balance. We expect you to be available for client meetings, prospect calls, and available during working hours.
  • Inclusive Culture: Join a people-driven, inclusive team emphasizing collaboration, shared success, and professional fulfillment.
  • Real Results: Contribute to client successes that matter—reducing fiduciary risks and optimizing benefits for thousands.
