CDC Issues Guidance for Fully Vaccinated People

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued its recommendations for Americans that have been fully vaccinated. The CDC considers people to have been fully vaccinated once two weeks have passed since they received the second dose in a two-dose series (Pfizer or Moderna vaccines) or two weeks after they receive a single-dose vaccine (Johnson & Johnson).

The CDC made it clear that this guidance only applies to non-healthcare settings. The new CDC guidance allows fully vaccinated people to:

  • Gather with other fully vaccinated people without wearing a mask or socially distancing.
  • Gather with unvaccinated people from a single household without wearing a mask or socially distancing if those people are at a low risk for severe COVID-19 disease.
  • Refrain from testing for COVID-19 or quarantining following exposure if they are asymptomatic.
  • Resume domestic travel without having a COVID-19 test before or after travel or self-quarantining following travel.
  • Refrain from testing for COVID-19 before traveling internationally unless it is required by the destination, and refrain from self-quarantining after returning back to the U.S.

In addition, the CDC said that fully vaccinated people should continue to:

  • Wear a well-fitting mask and practice social distancing of at least six feet while in public.
  • Wear a mask, practice social distancing, and follow other CDC-recommended prevention measures when visiting with unvaccinated people who are either at an increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease or have an unvaccinated household member who is at an increased risk for severe COVID-19 disease.
  • Wear a mask, practice social distancing, and follow other CDC-recommended prevention measures when visiting with unvaccinated people from more than one household.
  • Avoid medium- and large-sized in-person gatherings.
  • Get tested if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Follow guidance issued by individual employers.
  • Follow CDC and health department travel requirements and recommendations.

The CDC considers older adults, those with serious medical conditions, and pregnant women to be at a higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
